It’s not a bold statement to say that today’s society is always on the lookout for instant gratification as we all know it’s true these days. It may be in the form of retail therapy, where you want that big screen TV, don’t have the money but are happy to use a 36 month interest free card. Within the same weekend the TV can be up on the wall, you on the couch, watching your favourite program. Too easy right?

The problem is that being easy and quick is becoming expected. I find this can be the case with the journey to financial security, with many people thinking that all their financial issues can be fixed in one appointment.

Do you go to your initial gym ‘health check’ meeting and expect the personal trainer to take the weight off you there and then? No you have to work at it, consistently over a period of time. Do you visit your naturopath, chiropractor, physio and expect instant relief to your symptoms? No, usually you will find the first meeting as an information gathering meeting, with a program of visits/therapies to be designed for your individual needs.

The same as the naturopath, chiropractor and physio, a financial planner will have an initial meeting (call it a data collection, fact find, health check meeting) it’s all the same thing. It’s basically a meeting to learn about your current financial position, assets, liabilities, income and expenditure. But it’s also a meeting to find out what your short, medium and long term goals are. What you hope to achieve, why you are seeking advice and the outcomes you are after.

Financial planning is not a transaction based service; it is an ongoing program that if embraced, can set you up to achieve your own definition of financial success. As you progress through your own journey, various transactions may be made in the form of loan restructure, property purchase, personal insurance, superannuation consolidation but these transactions will not provide you with the ongoing tools needed to stay on track of your financial portfolio.

If you are looking for instant gratification to become wealthy from a financial planner, you may find you will leave your first appointment disappointed. There is no such thing as successful instant gratification, all good things come to those who wait and put the necessary effort in.
